Presented by 7th Floor Productions

A play by Penelope Skinner

The Meek shall inherit the earth.

Irene is a songwriter, a dreamer, a factory worker; a cog in the machine of a repressive ultra-religious regime somewhere in our own world, our own future. In a prison cell, we encounter Irene who has written and performed a love song which has been taken to be a blasphemous attack on the Holy Spirit and the regime intends to make an example of her. Confined with her in a cell, we see her conversations with her best friend and her appointed lawyer as she unexpectedly becomes a reluctant beacon of hope for the other oppressed people of her nation. Skinner shows how a small act of resistance can turn an independent thinker into a political revolutionary.

As with the Black Lives Matter Protest rippling across the globe, the democratising power of social media doesn’t necessarily bring victory for the forces of justice, but resistance can still be fertile. Meek explores the layered relationships of state control, fragile female friendship as well as our broader desire to be ‘liked’ and ‘seen’ on social media and the intoxicating lure of going viral.
