We are excited to announce that Applecart Arts is one of four key partner organisations who will be delivering this year’s Newham Unlocked festival.

Newham Unlocked is a festival of free events, performances and workshops for the local residents of Newham to explore and enjoy.

Commissioned by Newham Council, we are looking for musicians, theatre pieces, circus acts, dancers, poets, storytellers, spoken word artists, makers, doers, workshop leaders and much, much more.

The theme of the festival is Unity, and we’re specifically looking for work and workshops that address this theme. The four main areas we are programming are as follows:

  • Workshops (for the local community to get involved)
  • Performances (a full-length show or performance, be that a piece of dance, music, plays, spoken word etc)
  • Street Performances (walk-about acts, magicians, clowns, buskers, jugglers, balloon artists etc)
  • Films

All events are free for the public to attend. Some may be ticketed to help manage capacity. However, there is a commissioning budget for work to be programmed so that you are paid for your time. We’ve budgeted for 20 workshops, 10 theatre and performance commissions and 100 walk-about acts and street performances.

When: The festival runs from the second half of September into the middle of October. Exact dates TBC. Please let us know of any availability issues when submitting your application.

The bulk of the festival will take place over two weekends, with evening activities and performances in the week between them

Where: Most of the festival will take place (under marquees) in the beautiful Plashet Park. We will also be live streaming some of the events and workshops to an online audience.
