School teacher David Martin, although born in 1960, is a man of the 1940s and 50s. As a child he became obsessed with the movies of the silver screen, which he would watch with his abused mother, escaping every Saturday morning to the cinema to avoid the wrath of his drunken and abusive father.
Adopting the characteristics of the 1940s, and in the absence of a positive male role model, David was influenced by the likes of David Niven, Michael Redgrave and John Mills. Residing in this persona, his safe space, he became man out of time.
A man of impeccable taste and manners, with a voice and vocabulary at odds with the tongue of today, he is a genteel man of chivalry and elegance. And yet, David Martin is responsible for the deaths of two men in his life.
The monologue takes place in a police interview room as Martin waits to talk to the authorities.
The play addresses the rate of change in the 21st century and the difficulties it brings to the older generations. It also considers whether the direction of change (particularly in education) is true.
