When they immigrated to Britain, Emi was almost a teenager while Aya was still an infant. Years later, the sisters find themselves trapped together in lockdown, where they are forced to confront the differences in their childhoods, their values, and their memories.

Amaterasu – Out of the Cave is a contemporary folktale inspired by the Shinto myth of the Japanese Sun Goddess and the God of Sea and Disease. A vibrant collision of new writing, Taiko Drumming, and martial arts; Papergang Theatre presents a tale exploring identity, family, history, and the caves we hide in to survive.

Amaterasu – Out of the Cave is supported by Arts Council England, with mentoring support by New Earth Theatre and The Yard.

Papergang Theatre supports stories of the British East and South East Asian community and the (South) East Asian diaspora. (South) East Asian culture in the Western diaspora, is a unique amalgamation of Eastern and Western customs. There is no formula for this culture which can manifest itself in East and West mixtures of varying degrees but with the overriding factor that it is not solely one, nor the other. It is a recognisable and yet unique experience.
