In January 2017, Applecart took over the management of the well-loved Harold Road Community Centre in Upton Park in the hope of keeping the building open and saving it from demolition.
The venue is comprised of a beautiful old Methodist Church, built in 1902 and a more modern community hall built in the 1950s and offers a variety of spaces and facilities.
Applecart Arts has maintained the community links with the building, still providing space for local charities and organisations, whilst at the same time developing a new theatre, studio and rehearsal spaces as well as a café and box office. We’re hoping this will create sufficient revenue to keep the building open and renovate it in such a way that it meets the highest modern standards of safety and accessibility.
Over the next few years all our fundraising efforts are going into developing the creative use of the building: upgrading the premises into a state of the art venue available for everyone to enjoy. Developments include refurbished and upgraded facilities and spaces, and the installation of a lift to increase accessibility around the building. We’re delighted that our plans have the support of the Theatres Trust, the national advisory public body for theatres:
“Cultural facilities play an important role in the local community, both through their role as a place for entertainment, and also by supporting shared social activity and wellbeing through engagement in the arts. This is particularly relevant within the London Borough of Newham, which has relatively few cultural facilities of the nature proposed, compared to other parts of London.”
Applecart Arts hopes to build on our already strong community partnerships whilst extending an invitiation to more visitors, artists and creative companies.
We look forward to welcoming you. Come and visit us, see the centre evolve and become part of our community!

The Cafe is open during the week for light lunches and refreshments.
We opened our cafe in March 2017 and since then it has grown into the cosy, welcoming space it is today. For music nights, craft workshops, quizzes, and performances, plus our box office and fully licensed theatre bar, the Applecart Cafe is the place to find out what's going on!
Pop into the cafe sometime and pick up a coffee and maybe some cake! Talk to our friendly team members about how you can make the most of your visit to Applecart.
In addition to the Theatre space we have three rehearsal rooms, which can be used for theatre rehearsals, auditions, workshops, meetings & conferences. We can provide tables and chairs for all our rehearsal spaces. The prices listed below are for use of the rooms for rehearsals and meetings. For use of the rooms as event spaces, please contact Joan Tardiel at joan@applecartarts.com.
All our studios and offices are full right now. Please check back at a later date for availability.
All of our spaces are available for hire. Whether you’re wanting to throw a party, host a meeting, show a film, or produce a performance we’ll be happy to provide you with the facilities and support you need.
