Café Opening Hours

Saturday & Sunday 9am-5pm

Please note that after dark the park gets locked, and therefore the only exit from the park is out of the car park to the west of the building. Signage will be displayed on this, and staff will be on hand to help with any questions.

Accessibility
The ground floor of our building is fully accessible, with ramps at each entrance. There is no wheelchair access from the cafe to the studio and theatre inside the building. There is currently no lift to the first floor of the building, which is accessible by one stair case. Below is a description of our building.

Passmore Edwards Building
The Passmore Edwards Building, which is Applecart's home, is a large Victorian library in the corner of a park. It has red brick with a light coloured stone with "Passmore Edwards East Ham Public Library" carved into it just above the ground floor windows and door on the front of the building. The main cafe entrance in the park has flower beds to the left and right of it, and a large glass canopy above the door itself with silver metalwork around it.

Main cafe entrance
The main entrance is situated inside Plashet Park, in the South East corner of the building. It has a short run of four steps from the park to the entrance doorway, and a ramp access to the green wooden door into our front of house area. Immediately inside the foyer is a large wooden "Applecart Arts" logo on the left hand wall, and two accessible toilets on the right hand side. Through a further wooden door is our cafe space, a large room with light green walls, lots of plants, a high ceiling, and tables and chairs.

Front entrance
The front entrance of the building is to the South side of the building, on Plashet Grove. Outside of the building are three gently sloping ramps; one from Plashet Grove to the south (through a gate), one from the park to the east, and one from the car park to the west. Once at the front of the building, there are two black metal gates which lead into a small porch with white walls. The porch then has a double set of green wooden doors with glass windows in the top half, that lead into the building. Once inside these doors, there is a wood and glass panelled wall which has two small doors on either side. To the left is a further single wooden door which goes into our theatre, and to the right is a single wooden door that goes into our studio space.

Floor surfaces
All ramps and steps on the exterior of the building are made of dark red brick. The foyer and accessible toilets inside the cafe entrance are hard dark grey slate, and the gallery/exhibition space is grey painted latex screed on a concrete floor. The cafe and studio space are wooden with a hard waring varnish, and the theatre space has a hardboard floor, painted black.

Walls
The cafe and park entrance are painted in a light green colour. The cafe has wooden apple crates on the walls with books, items for sale and plants inside them. The gallery space has white walls and a white ceiling. The studio space has dark blue walls with a white rail around 1m off the floor, a white skirting board, white radiators and a white ceiling. The theatre has black curtains around the entire space and a black ceiling. Behind these curtains are red walls with a white rail about 1m off the floor, white skirting boards and white radiators.

Theatre
Inside the theatre as standard is a tiered bank of seating to the left of the door. Wheelchair spaces are allocated on the front row of the audience on the same level as the entrance to the theatre.

Inside the building
When arriving at Applecart, it is expected that those arriving will congregate in the cafe space. The cafe space has an open entrance with no doors to allow through flow to and from the gallery space. The floor has a small incline into the gallery space. Once inside the gallery space, you can access the theatre and studio spaces through a wood and glass panelled wall with two small doors on either side. The doors are not big enough for a standard sized wheelchair to fit through, so wheelchair users must go out of the building from the cafe entrance and back in through the front entrance to access these spaces.

Standard: This is the regular ticket price
Pay More: For those who can afford to help us offer cheaper tickets to those who need them.

How will I receive my tickets?

Tickets will be delivered via email as an e-ticket. Please have this ready to show to our staff or volunteer on the door when going into the event space.

Do give us a call on 020 3475 4280 or email info@applecartarts.com and we'll do our best to help. It may be that the e-ticket has found its way into a spam folder. Don't worry if you can't find it, we can always check your name on the door.

What time should I arrive for the event?

Please aim to arrive at least 30 minutes before the performance start time. Our cafe will be open before the event, so you can arrive and enjoy a drink or some food before it starts.

Can I take my bag into the theatre?

Our theatre is very small, and has limited space in the auditorium. We encourage visitors to bring only small bags wherever possible, and tuck them under their chair in the auditorium ensuring that they do not block any aisles or fire escapes.

Buggies will need to be left outside the auditorium in our exhibition or studio spaces. We cannot guarantee that there will be space to do this.

Although we do our best to keep our building safe and secure, all belongings are brought at your own risk.

Can I reserve a specific seat?

We do not allocate seating. If you require a specific seat for accessibility reasons, please mention this in the comments at checkout, email us at info@applecartarts.com or call us on 020 3475 4280 before the show to confirm.

Which entrance should I use?

Our main entrance on a day-to-day basis is on the side of the building in the park (What Three Words location above). For most events, we will also fully open up the front entrance on Plashet Grove. When you arrive, please wait in the cafe and let staff know that you are here for a particular event.

Do you have a bar, and do you sell food and merchandise?

Yes. Our cafe is open daily (opening times at the top of this page), and our bar serves a wide selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and excellent food at affordable prices.

Some shows do sell merchandise for performances, so where available we will be selling these. Do also look out for our selection of Applecart pens and cards!

Can I use cash to buy tickets, refreshments and merchandise?

When buying tickets in advance of an event, we only accept card payments.

Our cafe accepts cash payments on all purchases.

Do you have wifi?

Yes. Free wi-fi is available throughout the building. The network name is Free Applecart Public Wifi and does not require a password.

We recommend that you download any tickets to your phone prior to arrival at the theatre

Are programmes available?

This depends on the event taking place. For programmes that are available, we will clearly sign this.

Is there a cloakroom for coats and bags

Unfortunately not. We have very limited space, so do not have the facilities to store coats and bags.

Is there air conditioning and heating?

The whole building is heated during the colder parts of the year. We do this using a combination of gas fired central heating and more eco-friendly heat pumps.

Our cafe, exhibition space and theatre all have air conditioning to help keep spaces cool in the summer. Some shows in the theatre request not to use the air conditioning due to the noise of the fans and the positioning of the air conditioning unit.

Wherever possible, we do not use either of these systems in order to keep our impact on the planet as low as possible.

Do you offer building tours?

Yes! We sometimes offer scheduled guided tours around our beautiful historic building, particularly for open days and similar events. We're often happy to show small groups around on an ad-hoc basis. Just ask!

Can I take photographs or film in the building?

Photography and filming is not permitted in the theatre when a show is taking place, unless the show has specifically given details that it is allowed.

Filming or commercial photography must be arranged in advance. For more details, email us at info@applecartarts.com

Is there step-free access to the theatre?

Yes. Information about step-free access is available further up this page.

Will I be able to re-enter the theatre during or before the performance?

If you need to leave the auditorium during the performance, our staff will readmit if possible.

However, depending on where you are sitting, we may not be able to.

Will the cafe be open after the show?

Sometimes. This depends on how late the show finishes. For daytime shows, our cafe will remain open for the normal opening hours. For evening shows, we may sometimes decide to keep it open if there is enough interest.

Companies bringing shows to our venue can request the cafe stay open in advance. If the cafe is open after an evening show, we will only be serving drinks and light snacks (such as crisps).

I've lost something. Do you keep lost property?

Yes. Please enquire at the cafe for more information.
